📌🍃Some key facts about mangroves in Ecuador
🔸#Ecuador 🇪🇨 has lost almost half of its mangroves in the last 20 years, due to the illegal construction of shrimp farm pools destined to international markets. This in turn has largely impacted local populations and their displacement.
🖐🏽We can help conserving the mangroves in #ecuador🇪🇨

Why mangroves are important for the life of the #earth ?
🍃✊🏿UNESCO World Mangrove Day: In 2015, the UNESCO General Assembly declared July 26 the annual conmemoration day with the aim of raising awareness of the global relevance of mangrove eco-systems that are "unique, special and vulnerable", as well as to promote solutions for their sustainable use, management and preservation. #Mangroves are key #ecosystems because they host an enormous #biodiversity, offering protection to coastlines and shores and store #carbon dioxide (which largley contributes to global warming). Mangroves are the second best CO2 sequesters in the world (after peat), which is why they are absolutely essential for mitigating #climate change. In addition, they are key for the survival of local guardian communities which are unique in the world.
🌿🇪🇨 Some key facts about mangroves in Ecuador:
🔸The tallest and most diversified mangroves were identified in Majagual, Province of Esmeraldas (predominantly home to black Afrodescendants).
🔸Ecuador has lost almost half of its mangroves in the last 20 years, due to the illegal construction of shrimp farm pools destined to international markets. This in turn has largely impacted local populations and their displacement.
🔸As citizens we can help conserving the mangroves by reporting illegal lumber and by responsibly consuming mangrove products, for instance, by respecting closed-seasons for crawfish and shellfish harvesting (cockles).

Sorry, July 26, of course! 😃
Mangroves are the second best CO2 sequesters in the world, yet those local communities who preserve them, and thus our global climate, remain largely invisible.

- JULY 23 is UNESCO World Mangrove Day, the same day I'm going to launch our crowdfunding and media campaign (Kickstarter and Experiment) to support black women fishing communities in Northern Ecuador and Madagascar, as well as to foster our comparative research on local community-based resource management within crucial mangrove habitats, highly relevant for mitigating climate change!
